Please join us for a unique one day symposium that will teach you how to think creatively about your nonprofit. Presenters will discuss how your nonprofit’s built environment can be greener, support your mission, and attract talent as well as how you can effectively tell your story, expand your network online, and find creative ways to connect with beneficiaries and donors. Funders will share numerous resources to get the financial support you need to get these creative methods off the ground.

The conference will be held in the HON furniture showroom conveniently located in downtown Washington DC near the Farragut North metro station. A showcase example of sustainable design, the Washington DC showroom earned the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Silver certification.

Proceeds benefit a worthy cause – Inscape Publico’s Nonprofit Collaborative Design Program, which provides professional architecture services for other nonprofits and the people they serve.


ABOUT THE ORGANIZER

Inscape Publico is an expert in working with nonprofits, showing them how to leverage design to enhance their mission. They have worked to build capacity for nonprofits such as Sitar Arts Center, MiCasa, HIPS, and the Arlington Food Assistance Center. Thinking outside the box, their unique business model has been written about in the Washington Business Journal, Architect Magazine, and by the Impact Design Hub. They have presented at the Foundation Center both in Washington DC and in New York. Inscape Publico is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit architecture firm whose mission is to provide professional architecture services for other nonprofits and the people they serve.

Inscape Publico’s Design Director, Stefan Schwarzkopf and DOEE Associate Director, Kenley Farmer, will discuss basic green office strategies for a productive and healthy environment, including energy efficiency, water conservation, and waste reduction for your nonprofit. They will present case studies and share funding resources.

Deloitte's social impact consulting practice leader Nate Wong will introduce the concept of "design thinking" that goes beyond the professional design spaces and is being applied to business and social sectors. He will show how to use this methodology to problem-solve at your nonprofit.  Nate will bring his decade of experience shaping strategies in the social, public, and private sector to share examples and answer questions, making this an interactive session.  Come ready to roll up your sleeves!

HON SHOWROOM - Training Room

Adam Krell is a producer, videographer and editor for Auteur Productions, making both short and long videos for nonprofit and corporate clients. He has worked on several award winning documentaries which have aired on PBS nationwide. Adam will present how to tell your nonprofit’s story through video and how one video can be used in multiple ways online to reach out to beneficiaries and donors. He will also discuss the latest technology for documenting and live streaming your nonprofit events.
 

3:10 PM - 4:00 PM  |  Session 5: Creative Thinking for a Capital Campaign

Development professional, Matt Alcide, will take attendees through the key decisions they need to make an informed decision about launching a campaign for their capital project and the reality of finding funding for it. They will hear first-hand accounts of those involved with the planning and implementation of capital campaigns, including learning about the unique approach by Inscape Publico through their Nonprofit Collaborative Design Program, from Executive Director, Gregory Kearley.

Lindenberg, Program Officer with The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation about what resources their organizations have available and what can give nonprofits the creative edge to win them.

Matthew Alcide, Affiliate ASLA

Before managing the DC, Maryland, and Virginia Territory for Anova, an outdoor site furnishings company, Matt was a nonprofit development professional for seven years. Matt managed the development operations for the Alice Ferguson Foundation, the Landscape Architecture Foundation, and Inscape Publico. In addition to his professional experience, Matt has served numerous nonprofit organizations as a volunteer. He also is the Managing Partner for Land8 Media, the social network for landscape architects. Matt received a degree in Political Science and History from James Madison University.

 

KENLEY FARMER

Associate Director, DOEE

Kenley Farmer is the Associate Director for the Affordability and Efficiency Division, under the Energy Administration of the District of Columbia’s Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE).  Kenley joined DOEE in March, 2015 as the Program Manager for the District’s Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) program and as a Program Analyst for the District’s Weatherization and Low Income Home Energy Assistance Programs (LIHEAP). Prior to joining DOEE, Kenley was the project manager for a $1.5 Million U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grant at Stewards of Affordable Housing for the Future to develop innovative ways to achieve energy efficiency in affordable housing.  Kenley served as a fellow at the White House Council for Environmental Quality under the Obama Administration where she worked on a variety of environmental and conservation issues.  In addition, Kenley worked for over five years as an attorney at Kellogg, Huber, Hansen, Todd, Evans and Figel, LLC on various litigation cases including natural gas disputes.  Kenley holds a Master of Science degree in Environmental Science and Policy from Johns Hopkins University, a Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina, and a Bachelor of Arts in history from Furman University.  Kenley is a proud resident of Ward 4 in the District where she lives with her husband and two adorable cats.

 

Gregory A. Kearley, AIA, LEED AP, SEED

Managing Principal, Inscape Studio  |  Executive Director, Inscape Publico

Greg established Inscape Studio in 1998. In shaping Inscape Studio it was not Greg’s intention to create a singular stylistic approach to architecture, but to put into place a framework for a collective design process. Greg co-founded Project 4, a contemporary art gallery, in 2006 with three colleagues. During the nine years it was open, Project 4 exhibited works of emerging and mid-career artists. The space, designed by Inscape Studio, provided a platform for showcasing a variety of media, including installation, video, painting, sculpture, and site-specific works. In 2010 Greg co-founded Inscape Publico, a nonprofit architecture firm. The mission of Inscape Publico is to provide professional architecture services to other nonprofits so that they can further their missions in the spaces created by Inscape Publico.

Adam Krell

Producing Partner, Auteur Productions

Award-winning producer, videographer and editor, Adam Krell of Auteur Productions makes films for public television, corporate and nonprofit clients. Adam recently produced a feature documentary, “Your Health: A Sacred Matter”, which will broadcast on public television stations nationwide this spring. The film is a comprehensive overview of the relationship between religion, spirituality, and health. Adam also produces an international affairs television series, “World Affairs Today”, for the World Affairs Council of Washington, DC, which broadcasts nationwide on the MHz Network. As a videographer, Adam's work was featured in the documentary, “Ashes of American Flags: Wilco Live”, which was broadcast nationally on the Sundance Channel. He served as an associate producer and videographer on such award-winning documentaries as “The Asian & Abrahamic Religions: A Divine Encounter in America”, “Three Faiths One God: Judaism, Christianity, Islam" and “The National Press Club: A Century of Headlines”. 

 

DEBORAH P. LINDENBERG

Program Officer, The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation

Debbi Lindenberg is an attorney who has worked in grantmaking since 2005.  She joined The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation as a Program Officer in 2009.  Her portfolio includes legal services, violence prevention and victim services, prisoners’ rights and reentry, and veterans and military families.  Prior to her work in philanthropy, Debbi practiced commercial and family law litigation, in both the private and nonprofit sectors.

Regional Manager for Mid Atlantic Public Sector, National IPA

Greg Melenchen serves as the National IPA Regional Manager for the Mid Atlantic, Public Sector. National IPA is a 50,000+ member cooperative purchasing organization that manages a portfolio of over 250 publicly solicited and competitively awarded national contracts. Our members may utilize contracts to acquire products and services, such as HON furnishings, at reduced costs while minimizing administrative expense. In his role, Greg is responsible for developing relationships with agencies and supplier partners throughout Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. Assisting State and Local Government, K-12 Education, and Non-Profit/Association members in their adoption and utilization of the National IPA contracts portfolio. Greg’s experience spans over twenty years in the Public Sector marketspace with management and business development positions at Thomson Reuters, Canon/Océ North America, Xerox, and Exxon/Mobil. His responsibilities include creating and developing relationships, and securing contracts in support of business opportunities with federal, state and local government agencies, as well as establishing collaborative supplier partnerships.

 

Rayya Newman, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, SEED

Senior Associate, Inscape Studio  |  Outreach Director, Inscape Publico

Rayya is an Architect with Inscape Studio and the Outreach Director with Inscape Publico, both are SEED-certified ‘sister’ firms, located in Washington DC. In her free time, she volunteers as Chapter Director for Open Architecture DC, a diverse volunteer base working to improve and help communities through socially responsible and sustainable design. She is an AIA member, LEED-accredited, and SEED-certified professional. Rayya believes in the triple bottom line approach to sustainability including social and economic as well as environmental issues. Her blog publicinterestdesigndc.org highlights public interest design projects, events, and people in the DC area. Rayya received her Bachelor of Architecture from The Catholic University of America and her Master of Architecture from Virginia Tech.

 

SARAH NEWTON

Business Development Associate, HON Company

Sarah is a Business Development Associate with The HON Company for the Maryland and D.C. area. Sarah has been with the HON Company for 2 years, and moved from a role in the Solutions Account Group at the HON headquarters located in Muscatine, Iowa. Sarah is originally from Chicago, Illinois and holds Bachelor of Science degree in management and organizational leadership from Illinois State University.

 

KIM BUCKNER PATTON

Director, Foundation Center Northeast

Kim B. Patton oversees Foundation Center’s northeast region including our New York and D.C. resource centers.  Prior to her current position, she designed and delivered training programs and curriculum for the Foundation Center geared toward developing and expanding the leadership and capacity of nonprofit organizations both domestically and abroad.  Before joining the center in 2007, Kim worked as a non-profit director, fundraiser and grant maker for over twenty years with organizations such as Hawaii Public Television, the Council on Foundations and the National Endowment for the Arts.  She has a law degree from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from the University of Cincinnati.

 

Stefan Schwarzkopf, AIA, LEED AP, SEED

Principal, Inscape Studio  |  Design Director, Inscape Publico

Stefan has headed or contributed to a variety of community-based work throughout his career, including a large-scale art installation in a public park, graphic design and layout for nonprofit organizations, and set design for a community theater. Stefan joined Inscape Studio in 2009 where he is a principal and pursues a collaborative approach to an enhanced level of design for residential, commercial, institutional, and nonprofit organizations, all linked by a commitment to making a positive social impact and rejuvenating the environment. In 2010 he co-founded the nonprofit firm Inscape Publico, which works in tandem with Inscape Studio to expand Inscape’s service offerings to nonprofit organizations.

 

EDWARD TUVIN

Senior VP Commercial Banking Group, CityFirst Bank

Mr. Tuvin is a senior executive with CityFirst Bank a mission driven community development financial institution (CDFI) in DC and has enjoyed a highly diversified senior level career in corporate finance, management, commercial real-estate finance, M&A, business development, credit & operational risk management, and financial engineering, including key positions with Textron Business Credit, Pitney Bowes Business Finance, where he co-engineered the formation and management of the startup implementation of a non-captive lending division, and is well known as a Carey Business School MBA who supports Business with Humanity in Mind as an outspoken defender against employee abuse and discrimination.

Nate is a founding team member and acting Senior Manager with Deloitte Consulting's Social Impact practice, where he helped marketplace leaders utilize their core competencies to maximize their positive social impact. He has over 11 years of social sector consulting experience, including work in over 10 countries with marketplace leaders in the public, private, and non-profit sectors. Nate's focus is on social impact strategy and social innovation within larger corporate or organizational structures, and has been featured in numerous publications highlighting his research on purpose-driven talent and archetypal business models used by companies to achieve social impact. Outside of work, he is a self-proclaimed foodie and adventure-seeking traveler, passionate about intentional design to create spaces, experience, and change lives. He has an MBA from the Yale School of Management and a BS in Systems Engineering with High Honors from the University of Virginia.
